Fewer children mean longer life?

Thursday, March 28, 2013

New research into ageing processes, based on modern genetic techniques, confirms theoretical expectations about the correlation between reproduction and lifespan. Studies of birds reveal that those that have offspring later in life and have fewer broods live longer. And the decisive factor is telomeres, shows research from The University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of chromosomes. The length of telomeres influences how long an individual lives.

Telomeres start off at a certain length, become shorter each time a cell divides, decline as the years pass by until the telomeres can no longer protect the chromosomes, and the cell dies. But the length of telomeres varies significantly among individuals of the same age. This is partly due to the length of the telomeres that has been inherited from the parents, and partly due to the amount of stress an individual is exposed to.

"This is important, not least for our own species, as we are all having to deal with increased stress," says Angela Pauliny, Researcher from the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Gothenburg.

Researchers have studied barnacle geese, which are long-lived birds, the oldest in the study being 22 years old. The results show that geese, compared to short-lived bird species, have a better ability to preserve the length of their telomeres. The explanation is probably that species with a longer lifespan invest more in maintaining bodily functions than, for example, reproduction.

"There is a clear correlation between reproduction and ageing in the animal world. Take elephants, which have a long lifespan but few offspring, while mice, for example, live for a short time but produce a lot of offspring each time they try," says Angela Pauliny.

The geese studied by researchers varied in age, from very young birds to extremely old ones. Each bird was measured twice, two years apart. One striking result was that the change in telomere length varied according to gender.

"The study revealed that telomeres were best-preserved in males. Among barnacle geese, the telomeres thus shorten more quickly in females, which in birds is the sex with two different gender chromosomes. Interestingly, it is the exactl opposite in humans," says Angela Pauliny.

Canon Pixma PRO-100

The Canon Pixma PRO-100 may be the new junior model in Canon's professional photo inkjet line, but as such it can still output gallery-quality prints at sizes up to 13 by 19 inches. It's a good choice for an amateur photographer who's looking to take the hobby more seriously.

At 8.6 by 27.2 by 15.2 inches (HWD) when closed, it's slightly larger than its Epson counterpart, the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R2000, and about the same weight. Like the R2000, it lacks an LCD; instructions and data like ink tank levels are displayed on the screen of the computer you're printing from. It offers WiFi and Ethernet as well as USB connectivity.

The PRO-100 uses eight ink tanks for its dye-based inks: black; gray; light gray; yellow; magenta; photo magenta; cyan; and photo cyan. The high-end model in the series, the Canon Pixma PRO-1, sports 12 ink tanks. Although the PRO-100's sticker price is much less than that of the PRO-1, its ink costs?at least in price per milliliter of ink, as there's no good way to measure the cost per printed page for this sort of printer?are considerably higher. Each of its tanks holds 13 ml of ink, at a cost of $1.31 per ml, compared with an even dollar per ml for the PRO-1, which has much higher capacity (36 ml) tanks. The PRO-100's ink costs per ml are also slightly higher than the $1.25 per ml of the Editors' Choice Epson Stylus Photo R2000.

The PIXMA PRO-100 has two paper trays: A rear tray for a variety of fine art and glossy photo papers, and a manual slot for thicker media. It also permits printing onto printable CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.

Canon Pixma PRO-100

Speed
Speed takes a back seat to quality with near-dedicated photo printers, but faster is still preferable, all else being equal. I timed the Canon Pixma PRO-100 (using QualityLogic's hardware and software) at an average of 1 minute 17 seconds to output a 4-by-6 print and 2:01 to output an 8-by-10. This is slightly slower than the 51 seconds per 4-by-6 and 1:42 per 8-by-10 for the Epson R2000, but much faster than the Canon Pixma PRO-1's 2:14 and 3:53 times.

Output Quality
No one buys a photo printer like the PRO-100 to print text, but it's good to know it can do so if you need it to, as it has above-average quality for an inkjet. It did especially well on several of the more common business fonts. Graphics quality was slightly above par for an inkjet, though colors were off on a couple of illustrations.

It's with photos, though, that the PRO-100 really shines. In our standard photo tests, it did very well in capturing detail in both light and dark areas, and in faces. There was the barest hint of a tint in a monochrome image, but only a perfectionist is likely to notice. I also did some ad-hoc testing, including with larger-format (13 by 19 inches) prints. It didn't do quite as well as the PRO-1 in printing images with very dark backgrounds, which isn't surprising as five of that printer's 12 ink tanks are various shades of black or gray. In a couple of prints, the colors were slightly off. Still, the overall photo quality is good enough to produce prints for exhibition or sale.

The Canon Pixma PRO-1 costs twice as much as the PRO-100 and is bigger, heavier, and slower, but has considerably lower ink costs. The PRO-1 did a superior job of printing photos with black or very dark backgrounds, and did slightly better in printing other photos as well.

The Epson Stylus Photo R3000 ($849.99 direct), which prints top-tier photos and graphics, adds a color LCD and the ability to print from paper rolls.

The Epson R2000 is a touch smaller than the PRO-100 and has a slight edge in speed, as well as slightly lower ink costs (per volume at least). That said, they both produce gallery-worthy prints, and choosing between them may come down to whether you prefer the look of Epson or Canon prints, which have slightly different qualities. They both offer WiFi, Ethernet, and USB connectivity.

Apogee Duet 2

The original, diminutive Apogee Duet was a revelation when it hit the market back in 2008. The Apogee Duet 2 ($595 direct) continues in the same vein, with even better sound quality, and a marked switch from FireWire to USB support?the latter necessary given how Apple is steadily removing FireWire ports from its latest Macs. It's not perfect, but despite its seemingly high price, it's a solid value given how great it sounds.

Design and Connectivity
The Duet 2 is made of textured silver plastic, with a black glass front panel. It measures 6.3 by 4 by 1.3 inches (HWD), including the protruding volume knob. The knob rotates smoothly in both directions; push it in, and you'll switch between controlling input levels for the two inputs, speaker volume, and headphone volume.?A headphone jack sits on the top; two would have been better. The back panel features a DC power adapter input, the breakout cable port, and a USB 2.0 port. Fortunately, the Duet 2 is bus-powered; you shouldn't need the included AC adapter unless your system pops up a warning about USB power draw, in which case the AC adapter could be used to alleviate it.

The breakout cable consists of two combination XLR and 1/4-inch inputs, and two 1/4-inch balanced outputs. It's a little less cumbersome than the white squid that shipped with the first Duet. Apogee also sells a $49 breakout box that eliminates most of the extra wiring, which is nice to have, although then you get into the question of whether a slightly larger USB interface with everything integrated would have been better or more portable than two smaller pieces.

Latency Tests and Performance
The Duet 2 records at 24-bit and at sample rates up to 192kHz, putting it on par with top-end interfaces from Avid and Universal Audio, not to mention Apogee's own, much higher-priced gear.?I tested the Apogee Duet 2 with a Ivy Bridge-powered 15-inch MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM and a variety of digital audio sequencers, including Pro Tools 10, Apple Logic Pro, and MOTU Digital Performer 8. The interface worked nicely with all three, for both recording and playback.?Apogee Duet 2

Playback latency from a MIDI controller was commendably short; in Logic Pro 9.1.8 in 64-bit mode, by setting the buffer to 64 samples, I could reliably achieve a resulting output latency of 2.5ms and a resulting roundtrip latency of 5.8ms. Sometimes I heard a few pops and some cut off samples with various plug-ins on my system, depending on the plug-in, even with no other tracks loaded; in this case, bumping it to 256 samples cured the audio issues, although output latency rose to 6.9ms and roundtrip to 14.5ms.

A few times, I noticed that the interface had either shut off completely, or switched back to a frozen "A" logo screen; unplugging it and plugging it back in remedied the problem in each case. But that was confusing, since the original Duet was bulletproof on FireWire, and ?I was testing the Duet 2 plugged directly into the MacBook Pro (not with a USB hub).

Connection issues aside, the Duet 2 sounds incredible. In fact, the Duet 2 is actually great just as a headphone amp, for listening through higher-end open-backed and closed-back headphones for monitoring or just enjoying music.?You can hear all of the detail work in Ani DiFranco's "Knuckle Down," including her fast up-and-down pick movements and the resonant sound of the acoustic guitar body. The low-end of the acoustic bass was tight, with just the right amount of finger noise on the frets. Rage Against the Machine's "Fistful of Steel," a high watermark for rock recordings from 1992, just before the loudness wars began in earnest, sounded huge, heavy, and transparent, with thunderous guitars and pristine vocal effects. Vocal recordings through a Rode NT-1A mic sounded crisp, clear, and detailed, and are a significant step up from what you get out of lower-priced interfaces like the M-Audio Fast Track.

Conclusions
All told, the Duet 2 is a beautiful sounding audio interface, even considering its high price-per-channel ratio. But the competition is catching up quickly. The new Focusrite Forte and MOTU Track 16 have the key advantage of working with both Macs and PCs. We've yet to review either, but one key downside with the Forte is that you need to have the AC adapter plugged in when recording mics with phantom power, a limitation the Apogee Duet 2 doesn't have. The Forte also only has one headphone jack like the Duet 2. The MOTU Track16, meanwhile, offers two headphone jacks in different sizes (one 1/4-inch and one 1/8-inch) and more front panel controls.

Finally, at NAMM 2013 in January, Apogee announced a slightly reworked version of the Duet 2, called the Duet for iPad/Mac; it's the same box, but with a breakout cable and internal hardware that also supports iOS devices in addition to Macs. The Duet 2 reviewed here can't be retrofitted to work with an iPad. Apogee has yet to start shipping the Duet for iPad/Mac in earnest, but all indications are that it will sound and work exactly the same as the Duet 2, aside from the addition of iPad compatibility, and will still have the same limitations; we won't know for sure until we test one, though. Whichever Duet you get, you'll be thrilled with its sound quality; just make sure you don't need the extra features the competition offers first. Finally, if you're a Reason fan, check out the Propellerhead Balance, which despite being a first for the company in terms of audio interfaces, acquits itself very well in build quality, features, and overall sonic clarity.

Brides from Surry County and surrounding areas were greeted by businesses and wedding industry vendors Saturday during the annual Mount Airy Bridal Fair, sponsored by the Downtown Business Association and held at Old North State Winery and Brewery.

Jennie Lowry Caudill, a representative for the Downtown Business Association who helped to plan the event, said she believes the event offers brides more ?one-on-one attention? than they would typically receive at larger bridal fairs.

The Mount Airy Bridal Fair encouraged brides and grooms to use local resources and businesses when planning their wedding.

The wedding industry in North Carolina alone brought in $1.4 billion to the state last year, and the average bride spent around $20,000 on her wedding, according to statistics released by The Wedding Report.

Brides who attended yesterday?s bridal fair indicated they wanted a simpler and toned-down approach to wedding planning, and the majority said they were looking to cut costs whenever possible.

Maranda Hill traveled from the Yadkinville area for the event after she saw an advertisement for the bridal fair.

Slthough her wedding would not be held in Surry County, she wanted more ideas for her reception and was finding inspiration by browsing the vendor booths and decor at the bridal fair.

Future bride Brooke Chilton, of Mount Airy, said she is planning a wedding for September with fiance Brandon Brim.

Chilton said she and her fiance decided to have their wedding locally because it is more convenient for the type of event they strive for: ?a simple celebration with our family involved.?

She was joined by her mother, grandmother, and future mother-in-law as they enjoyed posing for pictures in a photo booth set up by one of the vendors.

After they selected props such as sunglasses and hats, Chilton and other members of her group posed for free pictures in the photo booth, which was a bridal fair favorite for those in attendance.

Angie Holcomb, owner of Prints Charming Photo Booth, said many brides and grooms have chosen to feature a photo booth at their weddings in order to entertain guests with ?interactive fun with unlimited pictures? and even an option for guests to add the pictures to an instant scrapbook for the newlyweds.

Representatives from Cooke Rentals said they offer a photo booth rental, available for any occasion, which had already been reserved for the upcoming Mount Airy High School prom. The Cook Rentals booth featured place settings, stemware, glasses, cake stands and a display of a variety of other items available for rent.

Cross Creek Country Club representatives said they were ?proud to offer a full-service facility? for brides, which included an in-house event planner and multiple spaces for the ceremony and reception. With 16 weddings held at Cross Creek last year, and past years with as many as 25 weddings, country club continues to be a popular wedding venue for local brides.

Agents with Travel Specialists said destination weddings continued to be popular with brides and the most popular honeymoon destination in the nation was Hawaii.

Several downtown businesses such as Main Oak Emporium and Something Different on Main said they have wedding registry services available for brides and grooms.

Vicki Fields and Robin Owens of Pioneer Printing had a booth decorated with ideas for invitations, save-the-date cards, programs, napkins, customized memory candles, and wedding accessories. Fields said that she recommends that brides spend their money locally because they will receive ?loyal customer service? they may not receive by looking for wedding needs online or out-of-town.

Jenna Claxton-Puckett, coordinator of the bridal fair and representative of the Downtown Business Association, said the annual event is tied in with one of the main focuses of the D.B.A., which is ?shop local and support local businesses.?

?I think that is what is so important about the D.B.A. ? we want to keep money in the local economy. You get a more one-on-one experience?personally, I am passionate about this?it has a trickle-down effect.?

Vendors and contributors for the Mount Airy Bridal Show included Salon 222, Pioneer Printing, Terri Hall with Merle Norman Cosmetics, Cooke Rentals, Cross Creek Country Club, Old North State Winery Catering, Prints Charming Photo Booth, Southern Bride, F. Rees Co. and The Addition, The Travel Specialists, Hampton Inn and Suites, Shelton Vineyards, Shutterbug Photography by Amber Adams, Something Different on Main, B-Dazzle Productions DJ Blanton Youell, Main Oak Emporium, White Sulphur Springs Cabins, Airmont Florist, and Professional Rental Service linen rentals.

Netgear PTV3000 Miracast adapter firmware update fixes handful of bugs

Netgear PTV3000

Using Netgear's PTV3000 Miracast adapter has been a pretty hit-or-miss affair, and is hoping to improve with its latest firmware update. Firmware v2.2.12 has a changelog that is mainly similar to the previous one, but fixes a handful of nasty bugs.

  • Dongle Tries to connect automatically even after a Manual Disconnect.
  • Win8 PIN pairing times out too soon.
  • WFD session exited abnormally (and inaccessible for some time).
  • Dongle locks up completely and is inaccessible when halting the WFD association process. Also, fixed the rare subsequent kernel panic in that condition.
  • Win8/Widi 3.5.41.0, N6235,WiFi 15.5.7 TV screen error message or no screen projection (Acer H233H monitor).
  • Sometimes unable to connect with Samsung Series 5 Win8 Laptops.
  • Win8 WiDi mouse cursor position is off.

Fixing unnecessary complete lockups of the dongle is a great thing, but as @spaceman78204 pointed out to us on Twitter, it also seems to support his Nexus 4 running Android 4.2.2 just fine. This adapter still seems to be having its fair share of issues, but at least Netgear is giving a shot at fixing them.

US DoD rumored to be dumping BlackBerry and purchasing 650,000 Apple devices (updated)

US DoD set to dump BlackBerry and purchase 650,000 Apple devices

The US Department of Defense is currently testing various Apple iOS devices and on completion of the tests is rumored to be purchasing 650,000 iOS devices. The iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads would replace existing BlackBerry handsets that can?t run the new Blackberry 10 software. The report comes from Electronista who has claims source familiar with the situation.

Following completion of the first phases of the project, as well as a few other initiatives coming to fruition, the Department of Defense will be ordering just over 650,000 iOS devices from the Cupertino manufacturer following conclusion of the sequester.

Previous reports had revealed that the testing program had cut out BlackBerry 10 devices in an effort to save money. While the testing program is still underway, our well-placed sources familiar with the matter have told us that "some of the needs can't wait" and as soon as the sequester was over, the order would be placed.

The 650,000 devices are reportedly 120,000 iPads, 100,000 iPad minis, 200,000 iPod touches and the final 230,000 would be made up of various current iPhone models. The new iOS devices would be distributed around the world, some to battlefields, some onboard ships and of course within the Pentagon.

It was widely known that older, J2ME based BlackBerryOS devices would not be upgradeable to BlackBerry 10, creating an opportunity for organizations to cross-grade rather than upgrade. Security is no doubt a consideration in the sale, because let's face it, news of the deal may have leaked...

If this report proves to be accurate, Apple taking this business from BlackBerry would be huge feather in Apple?s cap and one we are sure to hear a lot more about in the future.

Update: Air Force Lt. Col. Damien Pickart, a spokesman for the Pentagon?s new mobility initiative spoke to Wired, dismissing the story from Electronista.

?We are not looking to replace those 470,000 BlackBerries with the systems they claim we?re looking to order.? ?Every couple weeks, there?s another report that we?re abandoning BlackBerries, and that is just so far from the truth,? Pickart adds.

PFT: Pollard signs one-year deal with Titans

Evan Rodriguez, Chad GreenwayAP

Bears tight end Evan Rodriguez didn?t want the attention that came with police questioning after an accident involving a car he was the passenger in, but probably cost himself a trip to jail because he lacked that internal timer that tells a person when it?s best to shut up.

(In other news, my wife just got a sharp pain in the back of her head and has no idea why.)

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times obtained a copy of the police report from Rodriguez?s arrest in Miami Beach last night on charges of resisting without violence and disorderly intoxication.

According to the report, Rodriguez balked when an officer asked for his identification, saying ?For what? I don?t need this,? and then ?I?m an NFL player. I don?t need all the media stuff.?

When the officer told him the information was going into the passenger section of the traffic accident report, he gave the information but appeared upset. He then walked away, but returned when another officer was giving the driver of the car he was in a roadside sobriety test. He then walked into the middle of the road, was told to go back to the sidewalk, but returned. Asked again to go to the sidewalk, he replied: ?I?m hardheaded like that and I don?t have to listen.?

Told again to go the sidewalk, he replied: ?I don?t need this. I?m an NFL player.?

After continuing to pester the cops, a crowd gathered, and police reported Rodriguez ?slurred speech, blood shot watery eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath.?

Every indication in the report is that Rodriguez would have been ignored as nothing more than a passenger if he had been polite and minded his own business.

Now if you?ll excuse me, my phone?s ringing. It?s the wife.

CSN: Ortiz among 4 Red Sox likely to miss April 1

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- When it comes to injuries, the Red Sox have a long way to go before they can catch the Yankees.
???? ?
The Yankees have lost outfielder Curtis Granderson and first baseman Mark Teixeira for extended periods. The best-case scenario for Alex Rodriguez is a return after the All-Star Game -- and even that seems wildly optimistic -- and after Tuesday, it seems as though Derek Jeter's return from a broken ankle is not without its setbacks.
???? ?
By contrast, the Red Sox injuries seem relatively minor. Unless things get unexpectedly worse for a couple of those now sidelined, the Sox should be at relatively full strength by late April or so.???? ?

But the Yankees won 95 games last year, while the Red Sox won just 69. And as they attempt to rebound from the debacle of 2012, the team's mounting injuries are a potential roadblock back to respectability.
???? ?
A look at the various ailments, the plan to overcome each one and overall impact on the club -- at least for the short-term.

???? ?
DAVID ORTIZ
???? ?
INJURY: Inflammation in both heels, an indirect result of the sprained Achilles tendon.
???? ?
TIMETABLE: Ortiz has all but been ruled out of the opener. The start of the regular season is less than two weeks away and Ortiz has yet to successfully run the bases, much less get into a Grapefruit League game. A 10-day down period of rest, coupled with some anti-inflammatory medication has not, to date, had the intended effect.
???? ?
The Sox are hopeful that he could return by mid-April, but at this rate, May 1 might be a more realistic goal.
???? ?
REPLACEMENTS: A cast of thousands. Or a handful anyway. The Sox could use anyone from Jonny Gomes to Mike Carp to Mauro Gomez to Ryan Lavarnway. Either way, it's a big dropoff from Ortiz, who has an OPS of 1.016 when he was injured last July and is one of the half-dozen or so best run producers in the game.
???? ?
IMPACT: Huge. Ortiz is the Red Sox' one game-changed in the lineup. Without him in the middle of the lineup, opposing pitchers can much easier pitch around others. If this injury grows into something chronic, the loss will be devestating to the team's offense and its goal of returning to contention.

???? ?
STEPHEN DREW
???? ?
INJURY: Post-concussion symptoms, the result of being beaned in the helmet on March 7.
???? ?
TIMETABLE: Uncertain. Initially, the Sox believed that Drew would miss a day or two. But it's been nearly two weeks and the Sox were concerned enough to send him Tuesday to visit with a specialist in Pittsburgh. This much is clear: he won't be ready for April 1.
???? ?
REPLACEMENT: Jose Iglesias will get most of the playing time, with Pedro Ciriaco serving as the utility infielder.
???? ?
IMPACT: If anything, Iglesias will represent an upgrade over Drew in the field, with peerless range and athleticism. But there's a considerable gap between the two offensively. Healthy, Drew can provide extra-base hits. In 2010, his last fully healthy season, he amassed 60 extra-base hits: 33 doubles, 12 triples and 15 homers. Iglesias, meanwhile, struggled to hit his weight last season in the big leagues. A new approach at the plate and some extra muscle in his upper half may help, but there's no guarantee that, for now, Iglesias is a major league hitter.

???? ?
FRANKLIN MORALES
???? ?
INJURY: Bulging disc in his lower back
???? ?
TIMETABLE: Recovery has been slow, even after an epidural, administered in Boston last week, has relieved a lot of the discomfort. Morales is essentially limited to long-tossing and is probably more than a week away from getting back on the mound.
???? ?
REPLACEMENT: A roster spot has opened the bullpen, one that could be taken by Clayton Mortensen or Daniel Bard or someone else that might have failed to make the team had Morales been healthy. There are no lefthanded candidates to replace him.
???? ?
IMPACT: The biggest hit won't necessarily be in the bullpen, but rather, the Red Sox' starting depth. The plan had been to stretch out Aceves, Mortensen and Morales in the spring, to have two candidates ready to go if something happened to one of the members of the starting rotation. Without Morales, that depth is thinned out, forcing the Red Sox to cast about for some other veteran starting options.
???? ?
???? ?
CRAIG BRESLOW
???? ?
INJURY: Left shoulder inflammation
???? ?
TIMETABLE: Uncertain. Despite some medication and treatment, Breslow has reached a plateau and hasn't been able to make much progress. MRI's have shown no structural damage to the shoulder joint -- which is good -- but Breslow is nowhere near getting back on the field -- which isn't.
???? ?
REPLACEMENT: As is the case with his bullpen-mate Morales, Breslow's unavailability will allow someone from the group of Mortensen-Aceves-Bard to stick with the club. But again, it won't be someone lefthanded.
???? ?
IMPACT: At the start of spring, new manager John Farrell believed he had the luxury of three effective lefites (Breslow, Morales and Andrew Miller), giving him the option of matching up as soon as the sixth inning, while still retaining two other lefty weapons. Now, he's down to Miller as his lone lefty to start the season. That will limit how much he can do with matchups and force him to count more on Koji Uehara, who has traditionally been effective against lefthanders.

Novel discovery reveals signals from brain aid the spread, persistence of pain

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Treatments for pain at the site of an injury may not always be good enough, according to a novel study by University of Maryland (UM) scientists reported March 20 in The Journal of Neuroscience. The study results could change conventional thinking about pain management, they say.

Several days after a painful event, signals from the central nervous system (CNS) spread the pain to distant sites away from the injury, as demonstrated in extensive tests in laboratory animals, says lead author of the study Ronald Dubner, PhD, DDS of the UM School of Dentistry in Baltimore.

"The increased pain sensitivity continues even though signals from the site of injury have been blocked with a painkiller," says Dubner, who is a professor in the School's Department of Neural and Pain Sciences. "The pain signals from the central nervous system persist for months and may be an underlying cause of the transition of acute pain to chronic pain in humans."

Based on these and other findings at the University and elsewhere, says Dubner, pain scientists and clinicians now need "a transformation in thinking" about how persistent or chronic pain may work, because the spread of the pain may involve mechanisms in the CNS.

New classes of pain medications could emerge from the discovery. The report is the latest in a trend of scientific discoveries in animal and human studies of comorbidity -- the experience of pain in one part of the body that is associated with pain in another. The discoveries underscore an expanded role for CNS receptors that signal pain. For example, hip arthritis can often result in the perception of pain coming from the leg, explains Dubner.

In another example, other researchers in the School's Department of Neural and Pain Sciences recently developed an animal model that sheds some light on the simultaneous occurrence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). More than 60 percent of women who suffer TMD also report symptoms of IBS.

"We are studying how pain is processed in the nervous system," says Dubner. "What our report means is that initially after the injury, the pain is related predominantly to signals going to the brain from the site of injury. Then, because of the switch to central nervous system processing, there is increased sensitivity that persists at sites where there is no injury, even though the signals coming from the site of the injury have been blocked."

Dubner and co-researchers in the UM schools of dentistry and medicine found in their study that a few days after an injury, the neurotransmitter serotonin was being released from the brain stem and affected receptors either in the spinal cord or in its counterpart in the trigeminal system, which provides nerve signals from the face and mouth.

"At that point, the pain is being maintained by this central nervous system mechanism and not from the signals coming from the injury site. It is another protective mechanism that is the nervous system response telling you that the injury has not healed," says Dubner. The finding that serotonin can act at receptors that result in hypersensitivity to pain as well as at receptors that suppress pain may explain its previous limited usefulness as an analgesic.

The five-year study is a collaboration among Dubner; Masamichi Okubo, PhD; Ke Ren, PhD, MD; Wei Guo, MD; and Feng Wei, PhD, MD, at the School of Dentistry; and Alberto Castro, PhD, and Asaf Keller, PhD, at the School of Medicine. The study resulted from a National Institutes of Health-funded collaboration between the dental and medical school researchers.

MARCH 19, ST. JOSEPH - Is amazing

ST. JOSEPH,?

SPOUSE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY AND FOSTER FATHER OF JESUS

FEAST: MARCH 19

Information:

Feast Day: March 19

Died: 1st century

Patron of: against doubt, against hesitation, Americas, bursars, cabinetmakers, Canada, carpenters, Catholic Church , confectioners, craftsmen, Croatian people , dying people, emigrants, engineers, expectant mothers, families, fathers, holy death, house hunters, immigrants, interior souls, laborers, married people, Oblates of Saint Joseph, people in doubt, people who fight Communism, pioneers, protection of the Church, social justice, travellers, unborn children, Universal Church , Vatican II, wheelwrights, workers, many more...

The glorious St. Joseph was lineally descended from the greatest kings of the tribe of Judah, and from the most illustrious of the ancient patriarchs; but his true glory consisted in his humility and virtue. The history of his life hath not been written by men; but his principal actions are recorded by the Holy Ghost himself God entrusted him with the education of his divine Son, manifested in the flesh. In this view he was espoused to the Virgin Mary. It is an evident mistake of some writers, that by a former wife he was the father of St. James the Less, and of the rest who are styled in the gospels the brothers of our Lord; for these were only cousin-germans to Christ, the sons of Mary, sister to the Blessed Virgin, wife of Alphaeus, who was living at the time of our Redeemer's crucifixion. St. Jerome assures us1 that St. Joseph always preserved his virgin chastity; and it is of faith that nothing contrary thereto ever took place with regard to his chaste spouse, the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was given her by heaven to be the protector of her chastity, to secure her from calumnies in the birth of the Son of God, and to assist her in his education, and in her journeys, fatigues, and persecutions. How great was the purity and sanctity of him who was chosen the guardian of the most spotless Virgin! This holy man seems, for a considerable time, to have been unacquainted that the great mystery of the Incarnation had been wrought in her by the Holy Ghost. Conscious, therefore, of his own chaste behaviour towards her, it could, not but raise a great concern in his breast to find that, notwithstanding the sanctity of her deportment, yet he might be well assured that she was with child. But being <a just man>, as the scripture calls him, and consequently possessed of all virtues, especially of charity and mildness towards his neighbour, he was determined to leave her privately, without either condemning or accusing her, committing the whole cause to God. These, his perfect dispositions, were so acceptable to God, the lover of justice, charity, and peace, that before he put his design into execution he sent an angel from heaven, not to reprehend anything in his holy conduct, but to dissipate all his doubts and fears, by revealing to him this adorable mystery. How happy should we be if we were as tender in all that regards the reputation of our neighbor; as free from entertaining any injurious thought or suspicion, whatever certainty our conjectures or our senses may seem to rely on; and as guarded in our tongue! We commit these faults only because in our hearts we are devoid of that true charity and simplicity, whereof St. Joseph sets us so eminent an example on this occasion.

In the next place we may admire in secret contemplation with what devotion, respect, and tenderness he beheld and adored the first of all men, the new-born Saviour of the world, and with what fidelity he acquitted himself of his double charge, the education of Jesus and the guardianship of his blessed mother. "He was truly the faithful and prudent servant," says St. Bernard,2 "whom our Lord appointed the master of his household, the comfort and support of his mother, his foster-father, and most faithful co-operator in the execution of his deepest counsels on earth." "What a happiness," says the same Father, "not only to see Jesus Christ, but also to hear him: to carry him in his arms, to lead him from place to place, to embrace and caress him, to feed him, and to be privy to all the great secrets which were concealed from the princes of this world!"

"O astonishing elevation! O unparalleled dignity!" cries out the pious Gerson,3 in a devout address to St. Joseph, "that the mother of God, queen of heaven, should call you her lord; that God himself, made man, should call you father, and obey your commands. O glorious Triad on earth, Jesus, Mary, Joseph, how dear a family to the glorious Trinity in heaven, Father, Son,, and Holy Ghost! Nothing is on earth so great, so good, so excellent." Amidst these extraordinary graces, what more wonderful than his humility! He conceals his privileges, lives as the most obscure of men, publishes nothing of God's great mysteries, makes no further inquiries into them, leaving it to God to manifest them at his own time, seeks to fulfil the order of providence in his regard without interfering with anything but what concerns himself. Though descended from the royal family which had long been in the possession of the throne of Judea, he is content with his condition, that of a mechanic or handicraftsman, and makes it his business, by labouring in it, to maintain himself, his spouse, and the divine Child.

We should be ungrateful to this great saint if we did not remember that it is to him, as the instrument under God, that we are indebted for the preservation of the infant Jesus from Herod's jealousy and malice, manifested in the slaughter of the Innocents. An angel appearing to him in his sleep bade him arise, take the child Jesus, and fly with him into Egypt, and remain there till he should again have notice from him to return. This sudden and unexpected flight must have exposed Joseph to many inconveniences and sufferings in so long a journey, with a little babe and a tender virgin, the greater part of the way being through deserts and among strangers; yet he alleges no excuses, nor inquires at what time they were to return. St. Chrysostom observes that God treats thus all his servants, sending them frequent trials to clear their hearts from the rust of self-love, but intermixing seasons of consolation.4 "Joseph," says he, "is anxious on seeing the Virgin with child; an angel removes that fear; he rejoices at the child's birth, but a great fear succeeds; the furious king seeks to destroy the child, and the whole city is in an uproar to take away his life. This is followed by another joy- the adoration of the Magi; a new sorrow then arises; he is ordered to fly into a foreign unknown country, without help or acquaintance." It is the opinion of the Fathers that upon their entering Egypt, at the presence of the child Jesus all the oracles of that superstitious country were struck dumb, and the statues of their gods trembled, and in many places fell to the ground, according to that of Isaiah xix.: <And the statues of the Egyptians shall be shaken in his presence.> The Fathers also attribute to this holy visit the spiritual benediction poured on that country, which made it for many ages most fruitful in saints.

After the death of King Herod, which was notified to St. Joseph by a vision, God ordered him to return with the child and his mother into the land of Israel, which our saint readily obeyed. But when he arrived in Judea, hearing that Archelaus succeeded Herod in that part of the country, apprehensive he might be infected with his father's vices- cruelty and ambition-he feared on that account to settle there, as he would otherwise probably have done, for the more commodious education of the child. And therefore, being directed by God in another vision, he retired into the dominions of his brother Herod Antipas, in Galilee, to his former habitation in Nazareth, where the wonderful occurrences of our Lord's birth were less known. St. Joseph being a strict observer of the Mosaic law, in conformity to its direction annually repaired to Jerusalem to celebrate the passover. Archelaus being banished by Augustus and Judea made a Roman province, he had now nothing more to fear at Jerusalem. Our Saviour being advanced to the twelfth year of his age, accompanied his parents thither; who, having performed the usual ceremonies of the feast, were now returning with many of their neighbours and acquaintances towards Galilee, and, never doubting but that Jesus had joined himself with some of the company, they travelled on for a whole day's journey without further inquiry after him before they discovered that he was not with them. But when night came on, and they could hear no tidings of him among their kindred and acquaintance, they, in the deepest affliction, returned with the utmost speed to Jerusalem; where, after an anxious search of three days, they found him in the temple, sitting among the learned doctors of the law, hearing them discourse, and asking them such questions as raised the admiration of all that heard him, and made them astonished at the ripeness of his understanding: nor were his parents less surprised on this occasion. And when his mother told him with what grief and earnestness they had sought him, and to express her sorrow for that, though short, privation of his presence, said to him, "Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold, thy father and I sought thee in great affliction of mind": she received for answer that, being the Messias and Son of God, sent by his Father into the world in order to redeem it, he must be about his Father's business, the same for which he had been sent into the world; and therefore that it was most likely for them to find him in his Father's house: intimating that his appearing in public on this occasion was to advance his Father's honour, and to prepare the princes of the Jews to receive him for the Messias; pointing out to them from the prophets the time of his coming. But though in thus staying in the temple, unknown to his parents, he did something without their leave, in obedience to his heavenly Father, yet in all other things he was obedient to them, returning with them to Nazareth, and there living in all dutiful subjection to them.

Aelred, our countryman, Abbot of Rieval, in his sermon on losing the child Jesus in the temple, observes that this his conduct to his parents is a true representation of that which he shows us, whilst he often withdraws himself for a short time from us to make us seek him the more earnestly. He thus describes the sentiments of his holy parents on this occasion."5 Let us consider what was the happiness of that blessed company, in the way to Jerusalem, to whom it was granted to behold his face, to hear his sweet words, to see in him the signs of divine lie wisdom and virtue; and in their mutual discourse to receive the influence of his saving truths and example. The old and young admire him. I believe boys of his age were struck with astonishment at the gravity of his manners and words. I believe such rays of grace darted from his blessed countenance as drew on him the eyes, ears, and hearts of every one. And what tears do they shed when he is not with them." He goes on considering what must be tie grief of his parents when they had lost him; what their sentiments, and how earnest their search: but what their joy when they found him again. "Discover to me," says he, "O my Lady, Mother of my God, what were your sentiments, what your astonishment and your joy when you saw him again, and sitting, not among boys, but amidst the doctors of the law: when you saw every one's eyes fixed on him, every one's ears listening to him, great and small, learned and unlearned, intent only on his words and motions. You now say: I have found him whom I love. I will hold him, and will no more let him part from me. Hold him, sweet Lady, hold him fast; rush on his neck dwell on his embraces, and compensate the three days' absence by multiplied delights in your present enjoyment of him. You tell him that you and his father sought him in grief. For what did you grieve? not for fear of hunger or want in him whom you knew to be God: but I believe you grieved to see yourself deprived of the delights of his presence even for a short time; for the Lord Jesus is so sweet to those who taste him, that his shortest absence is a subject of the greatest grief to them." This mystery is an emblem of the devout soul, and Jesus sometimes withdrawing himself, and leaving her in dryness, that she may be more earnest in seeking him. But, above all, how eagerly ought the soul which has lost God by sin to seek him again, and how bitterly ought she to deplore her extreme misfortune!

As no further mention is made of St. Joseph, he must have died before the marriage of Cana and the beginning of our divine Saviour's ministry. We cannot doubt but he had the happiness of Jesus and Mary attending at his death, praying by him, assisting and comforting him in his last moments: whence he is particularly invoked for the great grace of a happy death, and the spiritual presence of Jesus in that tremendous hour. The church reads the history of the Patriarch Joseph on his festival, who was styled the saviour of Egypt, which he delivered from perishing by famine; and was appointed the faithful master of the household of Potiphar, and of that of Pharaoh and his kingdom. But our great saint was chosen by God the saviour of the life of him who was the true Saviour of the souls of men, rescuing him from the tyranny of Herod. He is now glorified in heaven, as the guardian and keeper of his Lord on earth. As Pharaoh said to the Egyptians in their distress, "Go to Joseph"; so may we confidently address ourselves to the mediation of him, to whom God, made man, was subject and obedient on earth.

The devout Gerson expressed the warmest devotion to St. Joseph, which he endeavoured by letters and sermons to promote. He composed an office in his honour, and wrote his life in twelve poems, called Josephina. He enlarges on all the circumstances of his life by pious affections and meditations. St. Teresa chose him the chief patron of her order. In the sixth chapter of her life she writes thus: "I chose the glorious St. Joseph for my patron, and I commend myself in all things singularly to his intercession. I do not remember ever to have asked of God anything by him which I did not obtain. I never knew anyone who, by invoking him, did not advance exceedingly in virtue; for he assists in a wonderful manner all who address themselves to him." St. Francis of Sales, throughout his whole nineteenth entertainment, extremely recommends devotion to him, and extols his merits, principally his virginity, humility, constancy, and courage. The Syrians and other eastern churches celebrate his festival on the 20th of July; the western church on the 19th of March. Pope Gregory XV in 1621, and Urban VIII in 1642, commanded it to be kept a holiday of obligation.

The holy family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph presents to us the most perfect model of heavenly conversation on earth. How did those two seraphim, Mary and Joseph, live in their poor cottage! They always enjoyed the presence of Jesus, always burning with the most ardent love for him, inviolably attached to his sacred person, always employed and living only for him. What were their transports in beholding him, their devotion in listening to him, and their joy in possessing him! O heavenly life! O anticipation of the heavenly bliss! O divine conversation! We may imitate them, and share some degree of this advantage, by conversing often with Jesus, and by the contemplation of his most amiable goodness, kindling the fire of his holy love in our breasts. The effects of this love, if it be sincere, will necessarily appear in our putting on his spirit, and imitating his example and virtues; and in our studying to walk continually in the divine presence, finding God everywhere, and esteeming all the time lost which we do not spend with God, or for his honor.

Web pioneers share ?1m for winning engineering 'Nobel'

Paul Marks, senior technology correspondent

"The geeks are winning!"

So said internet pioneer Vint Cerf today as he and four fellow engineers who contributed to the creation of the internet and the web picked up the inaugural Queen Elizabeth prize for engineering - billed by its promoters as the new "Nobel prize for technology".

The winners were Bob Kahn, Louis Pouzin and Cerf for their development of the internet's robust packet-based transmission systems, Tim Berners-Lee for the World Wide Web itself and Marc Andreesen for the first browser, NCSA Mosaic.

The winners scooped a ?1 million prize pot donated by 11 award sponsors, including BAE Systems, Toshiba, GlaxoSmithKline and Sony. Despite being a UK-run competition, the prize is open to inventions from any nation and will be run every two years.

Organised by the British Royal Academy of Engineering, the prize is given for an "outstanding advance in engineering that creates significant benefit to humanity". The winner was chosen because its technology, in the words of judge Brian Cox, "has demonstrably had an effect on the whole world".

"And these five individuals have all played a key role in the development of the internet and the World Wide Web," says Stanford University president John Hennessey.

The winners were keen to stress that engineering is a team job. Andreesen donated his share of the prize to charity and thanked his co-workers, especially at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

"You don't do engineering by yourself. It's teamwork," says Pouzin. " And our teams are not here."

In 2011, when the competition was launched, British prime minister David Cameron said that the aim was to reward innovation and so inspire still more innovation - at a time when UK patenting rates are flagging. Still another aim was to get young people off the notion that? appearing on X Factor was the highest they could aim for, by making engineering and technology development attractive once again.

"Engineering needs to be celebrated," says Berners-Lee. "I am an engineer - that's what it says on my passport."

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. New research suggests that elite athletes Olympic medalists in volleyball, for example perform better than the rest of us in yet another way. These athletes excel not only in their sport of choice but also in how fast their brains take in and respond to new information cognitive abilities that are important on and off the court.

The study, of 87 top-ranked Brazilian volleyball players (some of them medalists in the Beijing and London Olympics) and 67 of their nonathletic contemporaries, also found that being an athlete minimizes the performance differences that normally occur between women and men. Female athletes, the researchers found, were more like their male peers in the speed of their mental calculations and reaction times, while nonathletic females performed the same tasks more slowly than their male counterparts.

The study appears in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.

"I think we have learned that athletes are different from us in some ways," said University of Illinois psychology professor and Beckman Institute Director Arthur Kramer, who led the study with graduate student Heloisa Alves.

"We found that athletes were generally able to inhibit behavior, to stop quickly when they had to, which is very important in sport and in daily life, " Kramer said. "They were also able to activate, to pick up information from a glance and to switch between tasks more quickly than nonathletes. I would say these were modest differences, but they were interesting differences nonetheless."

Overall, the athletes were faster at memory tests and tasks that required them to switch between tasks. They were quicker to notice things in their peripheral vision and to detect subtle changes in a scene. And in general, they were better able to accomplish tasks while ignoring confusing or irrelevant information.

Perhaps the most interesting discovery was that female athletes had significant cognitive advantages over their nonathletic counterparts, Kramer said, advantages that minimized the subtle speed differences between them and the men. The female athletes were faster than their nonathletic peers at detecting changes in a scene and could more quickly pick out relevant details from a distracting background. Their performance on these and the other tasks was on par with the male athletes, whereas nonathletic males consistently outperformed their female peers.

Nonathletes excelled at only one of the cognitive tests the researchers administered. In this test, called the stopping task, participants were asked to type a "Z" or "/" key as soon as they saw it on a computer screen unless they heard a tone shortly after the character appeared, in which case they were told to refrain from responding. Nonathletes tended to be faster in cases where the tone never sounded, while athletes were better at inhibiting their responses after hearing a tone.

The ability to inhibit a response is one marker of what brain researchers call "executive function," the capacity to control, plan and regulate one's behavior, Kramer said. While it has obvious advantages in sport, the ability to quickly inhibit an action also is useful in daily life, he said.

"One way to think about it is you're in your car and you're ready to start off at a light and you catch in your side vision a car or a bicyclist that you didn't see a second ago," he said. Being able to stop after having decided to go can be a lifesaver in that situation.

"So both facilitating and inhibiting behavior is important," he said.

Kramer said the athletes' slower performance on this one task might be the result of a strategic decision they had made to wait and see if the tone sounded before they committed to pressing a key.

"My bet is that the athletes were just learning to read the task a little better," he said. "So if I'm a little slower in going, I'll be a little better at stopping if I need to."

All in all, the new findings add to the evidence that those who spend years training on specific physical tasks tend to also have enhanced cognitive abilities, Kramer said.

"Our understanding is imperfect because we don't know whether these abilities in the athletes were 'born' or 'made,' " he said. "Perhaps people gravitate to these sports because they're good at both. Or perhaps it's the training that enhances their cognitive abilities as well as their physical ones. My intuition is that it's a little bit of both."
