Wacom Bamboo Stylus Pocket

By Eugene Kim

Whether you're drawing or taking notes with the iPad, you'll want to pick up a stylus. They're more precise than fingertips alone and bring a familiar pen-and-pad feel to your digital canvas. The Wacom Bamboo Stylus Pocket ($34.95 direct) offers accurate control on par with most other styluses, but it really sets itself apart with a portable and easy-to-store design. The most useful tool is the one you have on hand, and the Bamboo Stylus Pocket makes it easy to bring a stylus along with you wherever you go.

The Bamboo Stylus Pocket approximates the look and feel of a high-quality ballpoint pen. You'll find a familiar pen clip and a dimpled rubber grip along the barrel of the stylus. The brushed aluminum body of the Pocket is collapsible, extending from 3.52 inches to 4.65 inches, and weighs 0.57 ounces. It's shorter than our Editors' Choice winning Pogo Sketch Pro, which measures 5.5 inches long, but it's still well balanced.

The Pocket uses the same hollow, somewhat squishy rubber tip found on a lot of competing styluses. I found the Bamboo Stylus Pocket accurate, with a nice friction to the tip that emulates the feel of actually writing on paper. Wacom includes swappable red and blue rings to customize the look of the stylus. But the company only includes one identical replacement tip; the Pogo Sketch Pro includes two different types of tips, one soft and one firm.

The collapsible body is nice for portability, but what really sets the Pocket apart is Wacom's clever stylus cap. The cap pops easily on and off, but it also has a rubber nub attached that fits into 3.5mm headphone jacks. It makes keeping the Pocket with your iPad much easier, resembling an oversized charm for your tablet.

At $35, the Bamboo Stylus Pocket is more expensive than the Pogo Sketch Pro and doesn't include a second tip for changing the feel of the stylus. It does, however, offer a more portable design, with a clever cap that makes it easy to keep the stylus with your iPad. No one stylus is best for everyone, so you'll want to look into various tip types and stylus designs to see which works best for you.
