TOKYO, Oct. 23, Kyodo
Kazuo Inamori, an influential businessman and honorary chairman of Japan Airlines Co., said Tuesday he considers nuclear energy a "necessary evil" to maintain the current level of lifestyle in Japan.
"It's necessary to have nuclear energy if we want to maintain the sophistication that Japanese society has," Inamori told a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, adding the government's plan to end nuclear power generation in the 2030s in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear crisis does not seem realistic.
Inamori also said the real root of the problem is that the government has promoted its nuclear policy without providing sufficient information to the public, pointing out that issues such as how to deal with nuclear waste are still undecided.
